It was an epic neighborhood love affair.
He lived east of Clark, she was west of Ridge—far more than the three-block walk that separates “chilled to the bone” from “call an ambulance, he’s gonna lose some toes!” during Chicago’s harsh winters.
Frigid winds off of Lake Michigan and the too-long wait for the ‘L’ or a bus have squashed the greatest romances of braver souls, but these star-crossed lovers held onto their passion through a long Chi-town chill. Somehow, Mookie and Shorty made it work.
As a testament to their eternal love, Shorty wrote their names in wet cement that spring.
Two weeks later, Mookie left him for his best friend Tiny.
